Video: Hold your edges, stay on your feet

Patience. It’s your goalie’s best weapon in the game of hockey. Sounds like a bunch of Jedi, philosophical talk.

Check out the video below of Arizona Coyotes goalie Karel Vejmelka:

Removing the defensive breakdown, what we notice is Vejmelka commits early. You can see below, the Seattle Kraken player just received the pass and is now entering a potential shooting position. Vejmelka is immediately down, limiting his mobility in the net.

Now imagine, if he came off his post and remained in his stance on his feet? He would have been able to move across (preferably on his feet) following the pass. Or been able to butterfly slide across if he was unaware of where the player backdoor was.

The lesson learned here, is patience on your feet. The longer you can stay on your feet in your stance, the more likely you have a chance at making the save.
